The “Gallo nero”: history, stories and wine!

The black rooster is the symbol of Chianti and the historic brand of the consortium of producers of Chianti Classico wine!

A legend tells that the territory of Chianti between Florence and Siena was for a long time the subject of disputes and to put an end to all this and establish a definitive border was adopted a very unique system.

The two knights, after having left the two cities, would have fixed the border at the meeting point; the starting signal was the crowing of the rooster in each city; the choice of the rooster would have been more important than the knight.

The Sienese chose a white rooster, while the Florentines a black one that kept closed to fasting and darkness for a long time, so the day of departure as soon as released began to sing even if the dawn was far away giving the Florentine knight a great advantage.

The Sienese rooster instead waited for the first light of dawn and accumulated a great delay and the Sienese knight crossed only 12 km meeting in Fonterutoli the other rider, so almost all the Chianti passed under the control of the Florentine Republic.
